She rose above them to become the first African-American woman to dominate the silver screen, and she became internationally known for her stage shows, like the Folies Bergère productions where she wore her infamous danse banane costume. Glittery and flamboyant, Josephine was a true tour de force once described by the great Ernest Hemingway as the “most sensational woman anyone ever saw.”
