T Magazine: Memo From Miami | Louis Vuitton's Objets Nomades

Design Miami opens to the public tomorrow in Miami Beach. But if you’re in town a little early and want a combination design-shopping fix, head across Biscayne Bay to Miami’s Design District (which is now almost better known for its blue-chip fashion stores than for its design showrooms), to Louis Vuitton’s temporary store at 170 NE 40th Street. Today the company is unveiling its Objets Nomades collection of 16 travel-inspired items by 11 notable designers and studios, like Christian Liaigre, Fernando and Humberto Campana, Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby , and Oki Sato of Nendo . Vuitton has a history of custom-made travel furniture, but rather than being large pieces like trunks or folding beds, the pieces in Objets Nomades, which are a mix of production and special-order designs, are for the most part smaller objects that don’t require a team of porters to carry.
